A Japanese Satsuma pottery Kogo of domed, circular form resting on a short footrim, the whole decorated in overglaze enamels, gesso and gilding with lengths of floral and diaper patterned textiles, the interior with a spray of flowering prunus and a vignette of maple leaves on a stylised stream, inscribed to the base "Ichizan" with seal.

DATE

c. 1880-1900

Size

6.2 cm diameter

Condition

There does appear to be some wear to the gilding at several points, however, it appears to have suffered neither chips nor cracks and overall in great condition.

NOTES

Above the kanji of the inscription can be seen a rebus, a cross within a circle. This is the Mon (or family emblem) of the Shimazu Clan who had controlled the Satsuma region from the mid 17th century until the Meiji revolution.
