Description
Probably Bombay, western India. A totally stunning early 19th century sandalwood card case, carved in high relif with Indian pavilions and palm trees. This truly is an amazing carved piece fantastic it is and very happy to keep it in my collection and not sell it. It came today 04/09/18.
Fascinating provenance
It comes with a small note dated 13/12/1945 the card case given as a gift which her brother gave to her mother when the lady was child ! Her mother who passed away 53 years so from 1945 so that would make it 1892 when her mother passed away so it was a gift so would most likely date 1800s when it was made!

This is a nice example but not something of exceptional rarity. It is 19th century, but I would say second half. Sandalwood is a heavy, yellow, fine-grained timber and in addition to carving, is often harvested for its oil which has many relaxing properties. Unlike other aromatic woods, sandalwood retains its scent for decades and is the second most expensive wood in the world. The main two species can found in India and Australia, due to the highly prized nature of the wood an illegal trade has developed, estimated to be worth AU$2.5 million in 2012. In several religions including Hinduism and Buddhism, sandalwood is very sacred and the wood, paste or powder is used in a variety of ways including as incense for meditation, worship, rituals and ceremonies.
