DESCRIPTION
A Japanese Satsuma pottery Koro and cover, the ovoid body raised on three ruyi- head feet on a stepped, splayed foot, the shoulder applied with fern frond handles and moulded with a continuous band of trailing wisteria, the domed cover surmounted by a shishi knop, the sides with panels of a Daimyo's procession and with travellers under bamboo on a country road, the foot and shoulder with bands of diaper designs, the base with the Shimazu Mon and the manufacturer's seal Futaji, with retailer's paper label affixed.

Futaji were one of the later Satsuma factories and churned out a lot of so-called "dragon ware" for the lower end of the market. The present piece is a rather superior example of the factory's work and the moulded band of wisteria is an unusual and pleasing feature.
The Mon above the factory mark is that of the Shimazu family who controlled the Satsuma region from the mid 17th Century until the Meiji revolution. However, subsequent to 1868 the symbol ceased to have much relevance to where a piece was made and was applied to decorative wares from all over Japan. However, from the quality of decoration, there is little doubt that this is a Satsuma style pottery.
