Extra Notes
The example mentioned as selling in Heritage Auctions realised over $7,800 (including premium), having previously sold for a hammer price of SF 24,000 in 2011. The seated pose of the lion seen here is highly reminiscent of the lions adorning the seat of Cybele, the great mother goddess whose cult was widely celebrated throughout Anatolia.
