(84 Silver)

The standard for Russian silver is measured in zolotniks: the most common fineness is 84, corresponding to 875/1000 standard. Until the late 19th century silver items had a town mark, Assay Master mark with date, and a Maker’s mark (as well as the silver standard mark).

In 1896, Tsar Nicholas II issued an edict and a new system of marking was introduced, known as the Kokoshnik mark (a cartouche containing a woman’s head, the silver fineness and the assayer’s initials). This system continued until the Revolution.

Russian Imperial silver is renowned for its quality and peculiar style, often finely decorated with enamel.

Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% by weight of silver and 7.5% by weight of other metals, usually copper. The silver is alloyed with copper to make it stronger because pure silver is a fairly soft metal. Sterling silver does become tarnished and metals other than copper can be used in alloys to reduce tarnishing, such as zinc.

Extra Notes

This is a late 19th century piece and will be popular on the market; at the moment Russian items are doing well and especially egg shapes due to their connotation with the Orthodox church. The egg is the symbol of resurrection
