NOTES
The marks i have discovered are not silver hallmarks but factory marks, so this will be silver-plated over cast panels of bronze, brass or copper. From what I can see, this is confirmed by signs of slight wear on some of the high spots showing the base metal below the plating. The style is what might be call 'Renaissance Revival' and would date to the latter decades of the 19th century. I correctly suggest that this is Continental, perhaps French, but not Russian I would have thought. E & S would be the maker's stamp for the cast panels, 'inv' being the latin abbreviation for 'invenit' which translates as 'designed'. The quality is very fine.
